Katherine Conaway digital nomad travelKatherine has been a digital nomad for 3+ years, traveling and working around the world since June 2014. She was a member of Remote Year’s second group, traveling with them from February 2016 to January 2017. At publication, she’s traveled to 40 countries and counting.

Katherine is a freelance producer, consultant, and writer. She contracts with clients to do consulting, strategy, and writing – working on websites, shoots, events, workshops, courses, and beyond.

For 2.5 years, she was the (remote) Head of Production for Public Persona, a brand strategy + creative studio. One of her current jobs is doing research and strategy for Bluffworks, a men’s travel clothing brand.

Katherine grew up in Fort Worth, Texas, and went to Williams College in Massachusetts to study math, but graduated with a degree in Art History. She studied abroad in Siena, Italy, which piqued her interest in finding jobs that would help her live and travel abroad.

After college, Katherine taught math for a year at the Casablanca American School in Morocco and then a year of 8th grade English at the American College of Sofia in Bulgaria. She moved back to the US and worked at a wind energy development firm in Austin before moving to NYC to work in production at HUSH, a design studio in Brooklyn, for two years.

Working Remotely & Traveling

Becoming a “digital nomad” was not, actually, an intentional transition. In May 2014, I left my job in Brooklyn and packed up my apartment to visit friends and family for the summer with a plan to return that fall / winter.

However, at the same time, a creative director I’d previously worked with had started her own design + branding studio and asked me for part-time production help. This stream of income allowed me to keep extending my travel plans 3-8 weeks at a time…

While traveling in Hong Kong, 11 months in as a digital nomad, she learned about Remote Year thanks to a friend forwarding an article. She looked at Remote Year’s site and contacted the founder, Greg Caplan, to ask about joining the program.

Although I was already working remotely while traveling, I found the program very appealing in spite of the initial sticker shock of the price. The fees covered RY planning + coordinating travel, housing, and events, and the program provided a community and networking opportunities, which added up to a valuable offering and big time-saver for me.

Katherine writes about Remote Year in a publication on Medium and has a podcast about modern work. Sign up for her mailing list to get updates about her travel, writing, and work.
